BlankinshipWelcome! I am a scholar, poet, critic, and translator. As assistant professor at Brigham Young University, I teach Arabic language and literature, Islam, and the Qur’an. My research is on classical Arabic literature, especially poetry. Currently I am writing a book called Counted Among the Dead on the blind writer al-Ma`arri and ascetic verse (zuhdiyyat). My work has been supported by the Fulbright-Hays Program, the American Institute for Maghrib Studies, the Danish Independent Research Fund (DFF), University of Southern Denmark, and the University of Utah. My original poetry is out or will appear in Gingerbread HouseBlue Unicorn, The Society of Classical Poets, Poetica Review, and Lighten Up Online. I write for general-interest venues like The Atlantic, The Los Angeles Review of Books, The Times Literary Supplement, RealClearBooks, Kirkus Reviews, The Millions, and more.
