About Me

BlankinshipWelcome! I am a scholar, poet, critic, and translator. As a professor at Brigham Young University, I study and teach Arabic and Islamic Studies. Currently I am writing a book about the blind author al-Ma`arri and ascetic poetry (zuhdiyyat). My work has been supported by the Fulbright-Hays Program, the American Institute for Maghrib Studies, the Danish Independent Research Fund (DFF), the University of Southern Denmark, and the University of Utah.

I also write for the mainstream press. I am a contributing editor for New Lines Magazine and my work has appeared in The Atlantic, The Los Angeles Review of BooksForeign Policy, and more. I tweet as @AmericanMaghreb.
